I Prayed To God About “Good Looks and Make-up”, He Surprised Me
Single, Good Looks, and Make-Up
I am a single girl who has single friends. Sometimes we have girl talks. We discuss many topics, including love and relationships. When we talk about love and relationship, sometimes one of us would say, “hey, you must take care of looks and appearance. Cause guys are visual creatures. They won’t feel attracted to you if you don’t look good enough, and you’ll miss your chance.” And I totally agreed with what they said. And I would advise some of my girlfriends to wear make-up, to look and dress their best. But I can feel these girls would act reluctant when we said so, even though we thought we said is for their best interest at heart. One day, I began to think about why they acted reluctant to our suggestion. I prayed, and God showed me one of my personal experience years ago.
Some years ago, my maternal grandmother was admitted to the hospital. My family and relatives went back to grandma’s hometown and visited her. During our visitation in the hospital, I was not wearing any make-up. I dressed casually, perhaps a bit too casual. Then when we returned to our home, one of my relatives shared a car with my family. I remember my relative said to me, “You have to take care of your outward appearance, put on some make-up, and change your wardrobe to some nice clothing. As a guy, even if you are someone with a nice personality, I wouldn’t notice you. I would notice other girls who dress nicely with a shining personality.” Now, that was years ago, I couldn’t remember the actual words he said, but that was what he meant. I knew he meant well, but at the same time, I felt reluctant to receive this message.
How did I feel when my relative said those words to me? I felt unloved. I felt unaccepted. I felt unless I changed the way I looked, the way I dressed, unless I changed myself to become another person, no one would notice me, no one would like me. I felt I was not being valued. That leads me to think. Maybe those girls felt exactly the same when I tell them to take care of their looks. And I begin to think, how do we encourage girls to take care of their looks and appearance in the most positive and uplifting manner possible. Again, I prayed.
God Was Not Interested In What I Have To Say, Then He Surprised Me
Surprisingly and not so surprisingly, it seems like God doesn’t have much to say about looks, appearance and make-up. I “tried” to get God to be “interested” in this topic. I gave Him all the reasons I could think of about why looks and outward appearance are important. Instead, this is what the Holy Spirit prompts me –
Do these women know that God made them in His own image? Do they know that they are fearfully and wonderfully made?
Do they know that God loves them and accepts them? Do they know their self-worth and who they are in God’s eyes?
If you are single and always dream of meeting the right person and getting married someday, do you know that ever since the day you decided to give you give your life to Jesus, you are already engaged? You are engaged to Jesus. One day He will come back. You are now preparing yourself for the wedding day.
If you dream of having a soul mate as a life partner. God wants to build a personal relationship with you before He lets anybody else pursue and have you for a lifetime. God loves you. God values you. No words can justify the love that God has for you.
God made you in his own image and sees that His work is good.
Genesis Chapter 1 recorded that God created this world and human beings. And the passage keeps repeating these words: “God saw that it was good.” Genesis 1:31 says, “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” God created you, and He likes what he has created. He sees that his work is good.
Jesus Christ – The Knight In Shining Armor
If you dream of fairy tales, a knight with shining armor riding on a horse to your rescue, but the reality shows you a different story – do not lose hope. Look at the cross. Look at Jesus Christ. He died on the cross for you so that you could have eternal life. He is your knight in shining armor.
God wants to pursue you before any other people can have you.
I was telling God that as girls, we want to be pursued. We want to be in a relationship. We don’t want to be alone. (At least for me). God is like – “Okay, I want to build a relationship with these women before they are in a relationship with another guy. I want to pursue their hearts before any other people could have their hearts. I want to be number one in their hearts.” And I thought, wow, God is really a jealous God, just as the bible has written.
Here is the fact – if you prioritize God in your life, you will know Him better. You will understand He wants nothing but the best for you. You will know your self-worth. You will know who you are in God’s eyes. No man can fool you and tell you otherwise.
