Partnership With The Holy Spirit

One of the most important practices in getting to know God better is to practice listening to His voice. How do you know if you are really listening from the Holy Spirit or other sources? I will share this based on my learning experience.

  1. Often, God’s ways are not our ways.

Isaiah 55:8-9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. When He reveals His heart to us, be prepared to be wowed. Sometimes what God revealed to us will be beyond human moral standards, human rules, and regulations. Yet if you study carefully, He will never go against biblical standards.

  1. Study your bible well.

Even the devil also knew how to use bible verse to test Jesus while He was going through 40 days fasting in the wilderness. Be sure to study your bible well, ask for the spirit of wisdom and discernment from the lord.

  1. Listening to the Holy Spirit doesn’t have to be complicated.

John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. Sometimes it could be as simple as “buy a lunch for a friend” or “stop, don’t keep going” while driving. Some say it’s your gut or instinct. But sometimes, it may be the Holy Spirit prompting you. In my personal experience, I do get that “gut feeling” sometimes. But I just ignore it, thinking that it’s just me thinking too much. End up, I was screwing things up, just because I didn’t trust that gut feeling. Later on, I only knew, it was the Holy Spirit that prompted me.

  1. Write it down and test the words.

Whenever I hear God speak, I will journal down what I heard and take action to test the words. Then I will pay attention and review what happened after this, but sometimes things may take time, so be prepared to practice patience and perseverance throughout the process.

  1. Practice makes perfect.

What if I heard wrongly? Or what if I have heard it but then I miss out on it? There was a time I felt so discouraged as I found that I might mishear it from God. And for some time, I vowed never to practice hearing from God ever again. Yet one day, I realized that it’s okay to make mistakes. I am just a human being, and I just need more practice, that’s all. So, if things go the other way round, or you found that you were wrong, don’t be discouraged. Just admit you were wrong, and keep practicing. Keep in mind that even if you fail or make mistakes, God never sees you as a failure; all you have to do is get up and try again.

  1. Don’t do it alone, learn from a teacher.

One thing I would recommend about practicing partnering with the Holy Spirit – is to learn from a biblical mature Christian leader who has anointing in this area. It is so much easier to have someone to lead and guide you along the way than doing this all alone.

Last but not least, God is a creative God, so do not limit how He will speak to you. He could speak to you through bible verse, dreams, through a conversation, a nudge in your heart, movies, music, art, and so much more. Trust that God wants to develop a relationship with you, and He wants, and He will speak to you.
